The Sunken Cathedral

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

After the tour with Therion I was completely worthless for about 1 ½ months. I was so excited to have time to work on music, but found myself sleeping10 hours a day and going to the movie theater all the time. I was trying to get myself into the mind frame of 1984 but I had not worked on it or on writing music for so long.
Since I was always tired slow music was appealing. So I just started to experiment with parts of Tisza. I kept thinking of Debussy’s piece the sunken cathedral. I did not let myself listen to it I just thought about what I remembered of it. The beginning vocal of Tisza reminded me of the scale used in the Debussy piece. So I started to experiment with some parallel chord movement. At the time I felt this would just be an exercise in impressionist techniques for the future. About a day later the experiment began to take on a very visual quality. I began to think of the end of the movie A.I. when the robot boy is under water in what was NY sinking towards a chanting voice - The chanting voice coming from the inside of a sunken cathedral.

Le Mer…

I still have memories of my family being out on a boat in the Mississippi during a thunder storm. Water was pouring in and we were going through some huge waves caused by a Barge (tug boat) in front of us. At one point a huge wave came over the top of us. At that point I understood that man only thinks he is in control of the situation. Nature will always win.
This experience would be nothing compared to the daily experience of those out on the ocean. The ocean is huge, really big. I imagine that when you are out on a little boat you must realize that you are just clinging to a cork. Yet out there rolling around and swimming through and perfectly at home in these massive deadly waves are animals that are singing to each other. This visual has always been very musical to me. The contrast of the strong waves, and the mystical unknown songs of whales – a song we have only begun to understand.

I explained these visuals to the artist I have decided to work with for this EP At 3MMI DESIGN. He sent me a sample this morning. It is going to be great!

Well there are many more new and exciting things to talk about with the band in the line of guest performances and songs for 1984 as well the other songs that will be on the E.P.

I am going to save that for another blog.
